It was Fred’s 90th birthday and the Ramblers celebrated in
style, food, drink and conversation flowed. Fred had to
make a speech and was allowed to talk as long as he
liked! The birthday cake was presented, we sang HappyBirthday and Fred blew out the candles in his own unique way!
A great time was had by all as Fred is everyone’s favourite!
Liz sent this email after the day.
Dear Penny,
Thank you so much for organising yesterday’s lunch, Fred and I hugely enjoyed it. It was a lovely group of Ramblers
and I’m sure Fred appreciated your kind words and everyone’s attendance and good will.
As you said, I think Ramblers appreciate such occasions as they meet up with members they might not have seen on
outdoor activities.
Below is Fred’s poem, if you think it would fit in with photos of the lunch.
ODE TO THE LEECH
Hail to thee small wiggly creature
On forest bushwalks such a feature
And although cursed and flicked and spurned
Always to our side returned.
No sting or blows are in your stocks
You just like cuddling in our socks
But still your touch makes females squeal
Mate I know just how you feel.
They need not fear your harmless bite
Because you’re a hermaphrodite.
You plant your kiss on foot or pate
You never do discriminate.
Patiently you wait along the track
For the step of the next mobile snack.
So please forgo to dance and screech
At the nip of the humble harmless leech.
Best wishes to you and Anthony,
Liz and Fred
