Bike Vault is a free community service supported by Bicycle NSW, Crime Stoppers and other organisations to help combat bike theft. It is a portal where bike owners can register their bikes, so that in the event of loss or theft, it can be reported to police and easily identified if found.
With the increase in ownership of and demand for bikes, thefts have increased by 60%. Over 25,000 bikes are stolen in Australia each year. In some cases bikes are found abandoned, others are discovered in online market places, many end up being recovered and held by the police. In most cases, the police have no way of tracing the owner – less than 10% are returned. By registering your bike identification details, eg registration number, and photographs with Bike Vault, the police have a much better chance of finding you.
