It was a lovely sunny day for it and the park was at its best in showing its colourful blooms. About 25 of us got together in the “Pam Robinson picnic shelter” which is a recent addition to the park.
Pam is a founding member of the Illawarra Ramblers Club which was formed in February 1991. At the first general meeting there were 21 members, the initial newsletter and walks program was published in the following month. The aim of the club back then was to enjoy the outdoors, appreciate the flora and fauna, meet new people and to make new friends. This has continued to be our mission, and our activities have extended to include cycling and kayaking. Back then the membership fee was $3 per year. Pam has been connected to the Illawarra Ramblers over all these years, she has led many walks and in recent times, has continued to keep in touch through her networks and by joining us at social activities. She told us that there were earlier beginnings – some years before 1991, a few people, including herself got together and formed a bush walking group. This ultimately grew and the WEA agreed to provide administration support including the handling of membership fees. The Illawarra Ramblers operated under the auspices of the WEA until 2015 when we had to separate and became an incorporated association.
Thanks to Pam and others who set the foundation, we have grown into a strong and thriving club. We wish Pam a happy birthday and good health so that she can continue to enjoy the things she enjoys most in the years to come.
