An interesting walk, with a little bit of everything. Start by wading across the knee deep Shoalhaven River from the Berlang campground– 150m ascent – visit the rather impressive Big Hole (a limestone roofless cave which is over 100m deep and 50m wide) – then undulating terrain to the Marble Arch Cave – return trip via same route does involve a steep ascent up from the cave of approx 250 ms and more undulating terrain

You can find a good write up for this walk here

The pace will be pretty easy going, no rush on hills!

This is a LONG drive (south of Braidwood),  I plan to camp at the Berlang campground on Friday and Saturday nights.  If you would like to book a campsite, bookings can be made here

On Sunday morning I will be visiting the Braidwood Bakery, always a great place to stop and grab a coffee and supplies for the long drive home!

For those who are interested, we will be walking on the Kain 3rd ed topo map

If you would like more information please send me an email / If  need be, we can discuss this on the phone (Please add phone number and good contact time in email)

Specific Hazards: River crossing and changing river levels, steep hills, optional clambering over slippery rocks on limestone near cave Specific Abilities: A bit of endurance and a sense of adventure! 🙂

Leader: Melinda Turner    View Leaders List

Thursday 17th April to Monday 21st April, 2025

Joint trip for Illawarra Ramblers and Shoalhaven Bush Walkers

The plan is use the beautiful Old Snowy campsite as a base camp and do day walks from here. Facilities are very basic, you will need to bring all food, your own drinking water, firewood. Car camping also allows you to bring all those little luxuries that you wouldn’t carry on a pack walk! (A good book, esky, chairs, lots of happy hour food and a bottle of wine, whatever … enjoy!)

Planned walks include:

Pockets Hut

Oldfields Hut

Circuits Hut

Currango Homestead & the nearby Tantangara Reservoir (beautiful, expansive views)

There also the option to explore the numerous fire trails on mountain bikes if you so desire. (Not part of the club trip, just an available option)

Or just take a day off and relax around the campfire! 🙂

You will need to organize your own transport, and have decent gear that will stand up to the weather of the High Plains environment. (Campsite is relatively sheltered but the High Plains is a mountain environment, campsite does get some wind!)
